This small wooden Shinto shrine was built by Japanese immigrants in 1923 and was confiscated by the city of Honolulu in WWII. Ringing the bell near the shrine's entrance is a means of self-purification by those coming to pray. The 100 pound sacks of rice near the alter symbolize good health. The shrine is located across the river from the Taoist temple on Kukui St.
