Kalaupapa is located in Kalawao County on the north-central coast of
Molokai Island, northeast of
Kualapuu near Kahiu Point, Kauhako Crater, and the Molokai Forest Reserve.
This is the former site of Father Damien's leprosy colony. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed a law making Kalaupapa a National Historic Park. This area is open to the public, but you must be 16 years of age to visit. Once you reach the peninsula, a tour guide will tell you stories of those banished to this "prison in paradise."
