A statue of King Kamehameha the Great stands in front of Aliiolani Hale. The statue was cast in Florence, Italy by American sculptor Thomas Gould. This statue was re-cast from the mold when the original was lost at sea near the Falkland Islands. It was recovered after the second version was dedicated at this site in 1883. The original was installed at Kamehameha's birthplace in Kapaau on the Hawaii the Big Island.
