Kawaiahao Church |
Located on the corner of King and Punchbowl Sts. Constructed of coral blocks, it the site of weddings, funerals and cornonations for generations of native royalty. It is Hawaii's most famous church.
Tkhe upper gallery has a collection of formal portraits of the royal families and it locally called Hawaii's Westminster Abbey. The graveyard contains the remains of King Lunalilo as well as missionaries.
There are services in Hawaiian and English every Sunday at 9:00am and 10:30am. Free tours are offered weekdays 9am to 1pm and Sunday after the services. Call ahead for scheduling.
The coral blocks were cut from brain coral when it was still wet and easy to cut with a saw. It is a permanent material when dry and worked into a wall and cemented with mortar made from burned shells to make lime.
