This volcano visitor center is just inside the entrance to
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park off Hwy 11. A movie about past eruptions is shown hourly from 9am to 4pm. Hikers can get trail info and the lastest updates on volcanic activity are posted.
Once inside the gate, all activities are free. The park covers 344 acres and was established in 1916. Today, rangers escort groups on scenic walks. Or visitors can take several self-guided hikes. It is a 10 minute hike to Halemaumau Overlook.
A 30 minute walk along Devastation Trail is on a boardwalk that goes through an ohia forest set on fire by a 1959 eruption. The Thurston Lava Tube is 450 feet long and 10 feet high. The Visitor Center is open daily.
