Kona Historical Society Museum |
This old store is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1800's of native stone and mortered with lime made from burned coral. Displays of artifacts, photos and memorabilia tell the story of life back then.
Ranching and coffee growing were the basis of the economy on the Hawaii the Big Island then. Sugar, pineapples, macadamia nuts and haoles came later. Haoles are white people from the mainland, most of whom arrive on jet airplanes.
It is located on Hwy 11 just south of Kealakekua Bay near Captain Cook. The museum is open weekdays 9am to 3pm and admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
