This beach is on the leeward side of the island. There are showers and changing facilities at this beach, which is popular with local families, who come for the day. The swimming is good in the summer, but marginal in the winter. The big winter waves are great for surfing, however, and the Makaha Beach is the site of a big board competition every winter. It is one and a half hours west of Honolulu on the southwest coast. The Makaha Caves offshore have underwater formations that resemble caverns, arches and tunnels at depths of 30 to 50 feet and are a popular dive spot on the Waianae Coast in the calmer summer months.
