Built on land granted by the Territory of Hawaii, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital is the oldest operating hospital on Kauai. Founded in 1915 as a tuberculosis hospital, it received its name from a member of the Wilcox family who died of tuberculosis as a young man.

In the 1960s, with the cure for tuberculosis well established, Mahelona Hospital started performing psychiatric and skilled nursing facility services. In 1986, a full-service Hospice Program was added.
