Mokuaikaua Church |
The original Mokuaikaua Church was the first Christian church on the islands. The present church was built in 1836 and is also known as the Church of the Chimes, because it sounds on the hour.
The church was built of black stone from an abandoned heiau. The stone was pointed with a white coral cement and a steeple placed on top. Christianity was introduced by King Liholiho, under pressure from Queen Kaahumanu.
The native religion had many kapus (taboos) that governed the behavior of women. The interior of the church features local koa wood and a model of the "Thaddeus", the ship that brought the first missionaries.
