The Puna district is often referred to as the wild west by residents. It is all the land from just above Hilo to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and all the land south of that. It is an area bigger than the island of Oahu with a population of about 34,000. It is underdeveloped, with a hodge-podge of towns and subdivisions scattered about.
