Punchbowl |
This geological formation is the bowl-shaped remains of an extinct volcanic crater one mile north of downtown Honolulu. It sits at an elevation of 500 feet and it is believed to be the site of a heiau where kapu breakers were cremated.
Today it is the site of a 115 acre National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. A huge memorial at the head of the cemetery has eight marble courts and the names of MIA's from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
The bodies of over 25,000 soldiers are buried in the floor of the crater and are marked with simple flat granite stones. It is open daily from 8am to 5:30pm in winter and to 6:30pm March to September.
