Royal Mausoleum State Monument

The Royal Mausoleum contains the remains of Kings Kamehameha II, III, IV and IV. Kamehameha I was the last king to be buried secretly in accordance with the old native religion.

Also interred here are Queen Likiuokalani, the last reigning monarch, and King David Kalakaua. Caskets are in crypts. The original mausoleum building is now a chapel. Other graves honor American Charles Reed Bishop and John Young, an Englishman.

Young was the British confidante of King Kamehameha I. Bishop was the husband of Bernice Pauahi Bishop and he went on to found a financial empire and leave an enormous trust that is still in the news today.

The mausoleum is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. No admission is charged.
