The first Volcano House was a thatch-roof structure built in 1846. The current Volcano Art Center started as the Volcano House that replaced the original hut in 1877 and was more of a lodge. The art center showcases the work of photographers, artists and craftspersons.Featured cultural artifacts include rice paddles, cutting boards, boxes and jewelry made from native woods. They also feature batik on silk paintings by Phan Nguyen Barken. Block prints depicting native legends are by Dietrich Varez. And there is also a collection of unusual hand painted clothing. The Volcano Art Center is a short walk from the Kilauea Visitor Center.
