Backbone State Park was Iowa's first state park and dedicated in 1920. In addition to Backbone lake, the park consists of 1,780 acres and is heavily wooded with a variety of tree species, predominantly oak and maple.

One and two bedroom cabins are available to rent as well as a stone lodge that overlooks the lake.
