The first battle of the Nez Perce War was fought here on June 17, 1877. Thirty-four US soldiers were killed to none for the Nez Perce. The visitor center in
Spalding offers pamphlets that will direct you on a self-guided auto tour of the battlefield. The White Bird Interpretive Shelter has exhibits that explain the sequence of the battle.
