Bethany is located in central Illinois in Moultrie County about midway between Decatur and Mattoon along Highway 121 at the north end of Lake Shelbyville. The town is also home to the Shelbyville SFWA.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,337, a decrease of 32 since 1990.
