Moultrie county is named for Gen. William Moutrie, a leader in the Revolutionary War. It is located in central Illinois just southeast of
Decatur and was formed in 1843 from parts of
Macon County and
Shelby County.
The county seat is Sullivan, the northern "Gateway to the Kaskaskia River Valley". It is named for the island in Charleston, SC, Harbor on which Fort Moultrie was built.
Area recreational opportunities include 11,000-acre Lake Shelbyville which is the centerpiece of the Shelbyville SFWA.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 14,573, an increase of 643 over the 1990 census.
