Preserved here are the remains of an ancient city founded by a Mississippian culture that flourished from 700-1400 A.D. and then vanished.
Now listed by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on its World Heritage List, it is the only prehistoric Native American city north of Mexico. A new interpretive center stands near the 100-foot-tall Monks Mound, which is the largest prehistoric earthen mound in the New World.
