Danville is located in east central Illinois in Vermilion County (of which it is the county seat) about 35 miles east of Champaign along Interstate 74 on the banks of the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River.
The Greater Danville area is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts featuring Kickapoo State Park, Kennukuk County Park, Forest Glen Preserve, Lake Vermilion and 2,700-acre Middle Fork SFWA. 17.4 miles of the Middle Fork is the only such section designated "scenic river" in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
Educational opportunities include Lakeview College of Nursing and Danville Area Community College.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 31,761, a decrease of 2,067 since 1990.
