Golconda is located in southern Illinois in
Pope County (of which it is the county seat) in the
Shawnee National Forest east of
Vienna off Highway 146 overlooking the
Ohio River. The town is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Dixon Springs State Park, a 900-acre park just west of town, is loaded with recreational opportunities including an archery range, horseshoe pits, baseball diamond, swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts plus hiking, camping and picnicking. In addition, deer and wild turkey hunting are allowed in the fall.
