Goreville is located in southern Illinois in Johnson County south of Mt. Vernon between Marion and Vienna along SR 37 near the Interstate 24/Interstate 57 interchange about 5 miles southwest of Lake of Egypt. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 982, an increase of 110 since 1990.

The town is within the Shawnee National Forest and is only minutes away from Ferne Clyffe State Park.
