Illinois State Museum

Come see one of the world's largest Ice Age mastodons

One of the foremost state museums in the country, the Illinois State Museum houses major collections in anthropology, botany, geology, zoology, decorative and industrial arts, the fine arts and cultural history. In addition to offering exhibitions and publications, the museum pursues ongoing research and interpretive programs and provides a wide range of special events, tours, and school and teacher training services.

Founded in 1877, the Museum was one of the first museums to be accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1972. Today, its status is recognized around the world. Each year, approximately a quarter of a million visitors view the permanent and rotating exhibits on display at the museum's main facility in downtown Springfield. Admission to all Illinois State Museum facilities is free.
