Lincoln is located in central Illinois in central
Logan County (of which it is the county seat) about 25 miles northeast of
Springfield along
Interstate 55. It is said that the town was christened in 1853 by
Abraham Lincoln bursting a ripe watermelon.
Nearby Railsplitter State Park was renamed Edward R. Madigan State Park in 1995. It provides visitors with fishing, picnicking, hunting, canoeing and hiking opportunities. Legendary Postville Park is where Lincoln played "townball", threw the maul and pitched horseshoes.
Lincoln College, a community college, and Lincoln Christian College and Seminary, a four-year school, offer educational opportunities to the area's residents.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 14,966, a decrease of 452 since 1990.
