Logan county, named for John Logan, an Irish physician and father of Gen. Gen. John A. Logan, was formed in 1839 from parts of De Witt County, McLean County, Sangamon County and Tazewell County counties. The county is located in central Illinois about 35 miles north of Springfield, the state capital. The county seat is Lincoln which bears the distinction of being the first city named after the famed President. This occured in 1853--before he was nationally known. Interestingly, Abraham Lincoln christened the town with watermelon juice. Old Route 66 still runs through Lincoln on its way to Santa Monica, CA. Lincoln College and Lincoln Christian College and Seminary call the area home. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 31,733, an increase of 935 over the 1990 census.
