Marengo, established in 1836, is located in northeastern Illinois in southwestern McHenry County at the junction of SRs 23 and 176 and U.S. 20 about 20 miles east of Rockford. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,385, an increase of 617 since 1990.Area diversions include opportunities for golfers to enjoy their outings at Marengo Ridge Golf & Country Club. In addition, highlights of fall include "Settler's Days", usually held the 3rd weekend in September and "Civil War Weekend", a 3-day event including reenactments and living history displays of 1860s artifacts and period clothing, held the 1st weekend in October.
