McHenry County |
McHenry county was formed out of the northern half of Cook County in northeastern Illinois in 1836 but the final boundaries weren't set until 1839 when Lake County was created.
The county is named for Major William McHenry, a noted leader in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War in 1831-32.
The original county seat was located in the town of McHenry, moved to Centerville (present-day Carpentersville) in 1844 and subsequently to its current location in Woodstock.
The beautiful countryside includes some of the NE Illinois' Chain O' Lakes system as well as Moraine Hills State Park near McHenry.
The Chester Gould/"Dick Tracy" Museum is located in Woodstock.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 246,812, an increase of 63,571 over the 1990 census.
