Alton Memorial Hospital was founded on a dream. During the 1920s, a woman named Alice E. Smith, widow of William E. Smith, a founder of the Illinois Glass Company in Alton, Illinois, dreamed of building a full-service, modern hospital facility to serve the community that she called home for most of her life.
In 1936 Eunice Smith and Ellen Smith Hatch founded the hospital and gave it to the community as a memorial to their father and mother. Ground was broken for Alton Memorial Hospital on September 20, 1936, and the building was dedicated November 2, 1937.
Alton Memorial Hospital offers high-quality medical services and sophisticated technology. Through its excellent staff of primary care physicians and specialists, as well as employees trained in various disciplines.
