Pocahontas is located in southwestern Illinois in southwestern Bond County along U.S. Highway 40 and Interstate 70 about 40 miles east-northeast of St Louis. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 852, an increase of 15 since 1990.

Outdoor recreation includes activities in, on and around Carlyle Lake and Eldon Hazlet State Park 15 miles to the southeast, Governor Bond Lake about 15 miles northeast of town and Coffeen Lake and Coffeen Lake SFWA about 20 miles to the north-northeast.
