Bond County |
The county was formed in 1818 and is named in honor of Shadrack Bond, the first governor of Illinois. It is located in southwestern Illinois and is touched by the Kaskaskia River on its southeastern boundary.
The county seat is Greenville and the population on July 1, 1999, was 17,155, an increase of 2,164 over the 1990 census. The population in 1854 was 6,144.
Greenville College, built in 1855 and originally an all-female college, provides a four-year institution of higher learning for the area. Scenic Governor Bond Lake is located just north of the campus.
