Saline County Conservation Area

Long before the first settlers appeared, the Indians made salt obtained from their "Great Salt Springs," located in what is now the Saline County Conservation Area in southern Illinois. Encompassing nearly 1,250 acres of bottomland and heavily timbered hills, the site is about 30 miles east of Marion and 5 miles southwest of Equality and borders the Shawnee National Forest.
