Sangamon River

The 250-mile long Sangamon River begins just west of Interstate 57 in the northwest corner of Champaign County and flows south through Decatur, then north of Springfield before emptying into the Illinois River at Beardstown.

The river is dotted with recreation areas along its length including Lincoln Trail State Park and Lincoln's New Salem State Park.
