Stephenson County |
Stephenson county is located in northwestern Illinois on the Wisconsin state line between Jo Daviess County to the west and Winnebago County to the east.
The county was created in 1837 and is named for Benjamin Stephenson, a Colonel in the War of 1812 against the British.
The second of the Abraham Lincoln-Stephen A. Douglas debates was held in the county seat of Freeport in 1858.
Freeport showcases the Art Center which boasts six galleries representing Asian, European, Native American and Oceanic cultures as well as ancient and contemporary art. Recreational opportunities are centered around Richland Creek as well as the Pecatonica River and Prairie Path.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 48,778, an increase of 26 over the 1990 census.
