Boone County

Boone county was formed in 1836 and named for frontiersman Daniel Boone. The county was created from eastern Winnebago County and borders Wisconsin on the north side, McHenry County on the east and DeKalb County on the south. Of the northern tier of counties, it is the smallest--at 290 square miles. The original settlers of the area were the Potawatomi Native Americans.

The county seat is Belvidere and the population on July 1, 1999, was 39,560, an increase of 8,754 over the 1990 census. Belvidere is Illinois' "City of Murals" with 15 historic murals lining the streets of downtown.

Essentially a rural county, it is only minutes east of the outskirts of Illinois' second largest city--Rockford.
