Elkhart

Elkhart is located in Elkhart County east of South Bend along Interstate 80/90 and Highway 20, on the banks of the Elkhart River. The city lies near the Michigan/Indiana border.

Founded in 1832 and incorporated in 1858. Elkhart is built around Island Park; the island resembles an elk's heart. The French name of the river, Coeur De Cerf translates as "Heart of a Stag."

The city's workers are employed in nearly 950 industries, ranging from small tool and die workshops to a multi-national pharmaceutical firm. In addition, the city is the center of the recreational vehicle and manufactured housing industry and a significant source of electronic components. Elkhart is also known as the band instrument capital of the world.

Elkhart is part of the Elkhart-Goshen, Indiana metro area.
