Kentland Indiana |
Kentland is located in Newton County (of which it is the county seat) along Highways 41 and 24 between Lafayette and Gary.
Kentland was established in 1860 by enterprising landowner Alexander J. Kent. It was in that first year of existence that Kentland was designated the Newton County Seat. The east-west running Pennsylvania Railroad and the southbound New York Central Railroad fostered early prosperity in Kentland. On the other hand, agriculture was the principal industry due to its location on some of the richest black soil in the world. Kentland is still known for its excellent farmland and agriculture is its prime industry, although new businesses and industries are growing in the area.
