Mishawaka is located in St. Joseph County between Elkhart and South Bend along US Highway 20 near the Michigan/Indiana border. Just off Interstate 80/90.Mishawaka, the Princess City, lies nestled along the meandering path of the St. Joseph River. The city is named after Princess Mishawaka, daughter of Shawnee Chief Elkhart. The legend of her romance with white trapper Deadshot, and abduction by her jealous Indian suitor Grey Wolf, characterizes the mixture of romance and history still found in Mishawaka today. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 45,310, an increase of 2,675 since 1990. Mishawaka is part of the South Bend, Indiana metro area.
