Also called "Bull City".

Founded: 1870. Population: 115. Area Code: 785. Elevation: 1652 feet. Located in Osborne County on Scenic Highway 24 between Osborne and Stockton, in North Central Region Kansas. From Hays City, Kansas, take 183 north to Stockton and then Highway 24 east. Nestled in the valley of the south Solomon River. The bluffs a mile or so south of town offer great photographic opportunities.

On a coin toss, the town was named after one of the two founders, General Hiram C. Bull. The name of the loser was Lyman T. Earl. The first post office was established May 31, 1871. Alton was incorporated October 1, 1885. On October 12, 1879, General Bull and two of his friends were killed by a pet elk. After his death, The populace changed the name of the town.

Alton is the birthplace of Russell Stover, Russell Stover Candy Company based in Kansas City, Missouri.
