Founded 1879. Pop.1300, Elev. 2765 feet. Located in the
Southwest Region of the state, in
Lane County, (county seat). This community is of the High Plains geology and is situated in the
Upper Arkansas River Drainage Basin and midway between
Denver &
Kansas City. Both the north & south forks of the
Walnut River start near Dighton, and flow to the east, away from Dighton. Farming and ranching are the main enterprises of the county. Most of the crops are grown under dry-land farming, but irrigation is utilized in those portions of the county which overlay the Ogallala aquifer.
Lane County and the surrounding vicinity offer many opportunities for recreation. Children participate in summer baseball and softball leagues, and can cool off at the municipal pool. The" older kids" can enjoy the golf course, boating, fishing and hunting. Summertime and wintertime alike are packed with community events for all to enjoy. The Lane Co. Country Club and 9-hole golf course are located only three miles east of Dighton.
