One of the incorporated cities of Riley county, is located in Bala township on the Union Pacific R. R., 26 miles northwest of Manhattan, which is the County Seat. The town was founded in 1881 and was first called Leonard in honor of Leonard T. Smith, formerly president of the Kansas Central R. R.
