Located in the North Central Region of Kansas, running from west to east and comprised primarily in thirteen counties. The counties are; Thomas County, Sheridan County, Decatur County, Norton County, Graham County, Rooks County, Phillips County, Smith County, Jewell County, Mitchell County, Lincoln County, Ottawa County, Cloud County.

The minor river basins or watersheds in the Solomon River Drainage Basin are comprised of the four branches of the Solomon River.
