Squaw's Den

Lake Scott State Park

In 1878 Chief Dull Knife and Little Wolf of the Northern Cheyennes escaped from their reservation near Fort Reno, Oklahoma to western Kansas. On September 27, the braves, women and children of the Cheyenne Nation made a stand on the bluffs of Beaver Creek, located just south of the park. This encounter with the US Calvary was the last Indian battle in Kansas.

The site became known as Squaw's Den Batlleground because of the cave where the women and children hid during and after the battle. Presently, a marker designates the area and describes the battle.
