Cave Hill Cemetery |
Located on the end of East Broadway, this cemetery combines an outdoor museum of 19th-century landscape architecture, and a botanical garden with more than species of trees and shrubs, of which, more than half are identified by marker; the meticulous cemetery grounds are maintained by 40 groundskeepers working to create a naturalistic environment. The cemetery also contains outstanding examples of 19th-century memorials and monuments, including the Wilder monument designed by Robert E Taunitz, the 'father of monumental art in America.'
Dedicated in 1848, the 296-acre cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains the graves of many of Louisville's prominent citizens, including General George Rogers Clark and Col. Harland Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. 16 miles of paved roads carry visitors through the site. Motorcycles, motor homes, bicycles, pets, and picnicking are prohibited. Open daily, gates close for the evening until 8am.
