Columbus-Belmont State Park

Search Columbus Kentucky

During the Civil War, this fortified point on the Mississippi River was known as the 'Gibralter of the West'. The site of the 1861 Battle of Belmont, the park marks the opening confrontation-point of the Union army's Western Campaign. Confederate soldiers stretched a massive chain across the river in an attempt to halt Union gunboats.

The chain, its 6 ton anchor, Civil War artillery relics, early Indian artifacts and restored battle trenches can be seen at this 156-acre site; other facilities include a hilltop Activity Center which accomodates 200, a year-round campground with showers and laundry, seasonal miniature golf course, picnic areas with shelters, and over two miles of self-guiding hiking trails. The museum, displaying Civil War artifacts, is open daily May-September; weekends only April and October.

Public activities sponsored at the park include Civil War Days in October; park is open daily.
