City Map with Features
This historic 14 room Federal-style home, once the center of the 19th century hemp plantation of John and Lucy Speed, interprets the plantation lifestyle from 1812 through the Civil War. Designed by Thomas Jefferson and completed in 1816 with slave labor, the house was host to Abraham Lincoln, a friend of Joshua Speed, during a three-week stay in 1841. Daily guided tours showcase the home's period furnishings, octagonal rooms, a hidden stairway, blacksmith shop, and period garden. Most of the exceptional structure is original and remains in excellent condition, including the woodwork, glass, and brass. A summer kitchen, springhouse, apple orchard, and stone barn are also located on the 18-acre grounds. A remodeled carriage house can be rented for private events. Open daily.
