Afton Villa Gardens |
The gardens are approached through a recessed wrought-iron entrance with a Gothic gatehouse. An archway of live oaks interspersed with giant azaleas shades the winding avenue for almost a half mile. The 20-acre park and gardens are next to the ruins of the villa which was destroyed by fire in 1963. Stone steps lead to a formal boxwood garden, laid out in an intricate maze. Other plantings include camellias and beds of seasonal blooms. A ravine with plantings of daffodils and azaleas is especially colorful in the spring.
The gardens are opened daily from 9-4:30, Mar.-June and Oct.-Nov. They are closed on Thanksgiving day.
