Krotz Springs was incorporated in 1917 and is surrounded by a ring levee for flood protection. Known as the Gateway to the Atchafalaya, located in St. Landry Parish within the Cajun Country Region, between Opelousas and Baton Rouge on the banks of the Atchafalaya River along US Hwy 190 near Livonia, Henerson Lake, Sherburne Wildlife Management Area and Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,330, an increase of 45 since 1990.
