Luxembourg City Luxembourg

Luxembourg-Ville

Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and its largest population center, with nearly 100,000 residents. It is located in the south central part of the country, at the confluence of the Alzette and one of its small tributaries, the Petrusse. The old city, set high on a sandstone outcrop and flanked by two river valleys, is a location that held considerable military value in prior centuries (see [luxchist]). In the modern day, the old city is united with urban sprawl extending well beyond the original fortress, but the topographical impact of the outcrop is no less dramatic.

Luxembourg City is a financial center, and home to one of the largest European Broadcasters, the RTL. Several agencies of the European Union are located in Luxembourg City -- nearly 10% of the population is employed in EU civil service.
