The commune of Mersch, population 6,997, is located in central Luxembourg, at the confluence of the Mamer, the Eisch, and the Alzette Rivers. The Eisch River valley is also known as the Valley of the Seven Castles, and Mersch is often called the gateway to this popular tourist region. Merschs castle, the first of the seven, was originally built in the 12th century, though it has seen many modifications and restorations in the centuries since. The onion domed St. Michaels Tower nearby the castle belongs to a ruined church. Another attraction in Mersch is a 1st century Roman villa with a 245-foot bathing pool.

Beringen, Mersch (population 3,333), Moesdorf, Pettingen, Reckange, Essingen, Rollingen-Berschbach, and Schoenfels are boroughs within the commune of Mersch.

The N7 and the N8 roadways both pass through Mersch, as does a north-south railway line.
