Annisquam Harbor LightAlso known as "Squam Light" and "Wigwam Point Light" |
Annisquam combines the Indian word for cape harbor and Cape Ann. In 1897 the present 41-ft, white cylindrical brick tower became the second replacement of the tower first built in 1801 at its present location at Wigwam Point on Annisquam River in Ipswich Bay, on Cape Ann's north coast. The tower is connected to shore by a wooden walkway. The lighthouse lens was upgraded in 1872 from a fifth-order to a fourth-order Fresnel, and in 1988 it was again replaced by its current 190mm plastic lens. Its operation was automated in 1974. The light flashes white every 7.5s and a foghorn sounds every 30s.
The site and tower were closed when interior restoration was needed. The tower can be approached by auto at the end of Lighthouse Road. There is limited parking close to the light.
The picturesque nearby Annisquam Village was visited by Rudyard Kipling and later served as the home of Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse when they wrote the musical, "Sound of Music".
