The Town of Ayer, named after a patent-medicine manufacturer, James C. Ayer, is in Middlesex County. It is located along State Highway 2A, about 3 miles north of State Highway 2, and is next to Ft Devens Cemetery and Devens Commerce Center, formerly the Ft Devens Army training base which was deactivated in the 1990's. Nearby are Long Pond, Groton, and Shirley.
Ayer is part of the Boston, Massachusetts-New Hampshire metro area.
